It's been on the table for a while (well, in a box under my futon). Five post- cards were chosen at "random" out of a stack of about 150 by a friend. Next, 20 found objects were chosen out of my entire collection. The project then is to make five small assemblage pieces, using at least three of the objects.
The postcard is of the Steamer Greater Detroit of the D & C Navigation Company from 1948. The largest steamer on the Great Lakes, which operated on overnight passenger and express freight schedules between Detroit and Buffalo.
Reverse side (impossible to read at parts):
Cleveland, Ohio. Jun 3 3pm 1948
Joyce Beighler
1463 Forest Dr.
West Lake,
Kalamazoo
68
Mich.
"Dear Joyce- Having wonderful time, but this pen is awful. Right now we're about an hour east [?] of d_ ____ earlier [?]. Wonderful Hunting [?]. --Be Good,
Marise"
The found objects: I don't make any attempt to identify them, or their context (idea for a new project). Amongst the 20, these worked best with the postcard. Best, because of shape (oculus, curved bottom, tube), material (metal and coral), and their ability to be used in construction (tube, clamp). I have limited knowledge of Great Lakes steamers, so I make no attempt to be literal: for instance, "binocular" shape (looking from a distance, "portholes")...

Once the project is completed, I'll post some updates.
